2015 Favorites - Makeup

Looking back on your favorite makeup products from month to month is a fairly good representation of what works best for you, but going back to look at what you've loved consistently for an entire year speaks volumes!

Take a look at what I've been using and use my trial and errors to your benefit!

The first product i'm going to talk about is my number one, only one I'll ever use ever again, descended from the heavens mascara. You get the point, it's the bees knees. But first, a little background on those annoying little uncooperative hairs on my eyelids also known as eyelashes. Mine literally have no curl, they are as straight as an arrow. Even with a high quality eyelash curler, they fall back to their natural straightness within minutes. Just when I thought I'd have to sacrifice an embarrassing amount of time of my day applying a strip lash any time I wanted something that even resembled an eyeball that had eyelashes, I found this little beauty.

This is the Maybelline Full 'N Soft Waterproof mascara. This tube of magic black goop will hold a curl in your lashes through hours of blood, sweat, and tears (This statement has been thoroughly tested, minus the blood thank goodness). The first coat you apply makes your lashes so insanely separated and defined, and as the name would suggest, Full 'N Soft.

You can leave them just like this and your eyes will look soft and flirty, or you can add a second coat to get a more dramatic lash. This is where the va va voom comes in. Now the awesome thing about this is you can use the same mascara for the second coat, or you can do what I love to do which is use a different mascara that has different benefits than the first. I like to layer on another mascara which adds lots of volume. Because the lashes are already so separated, its nearly impossible to clump them with the second mascara that may normally cause you to look like you've only got four eyelashes. Ready for the best part? You can get it at any drugstore for about $8. Let the hallelujah chorus commence.

Disclaimer: I have only tried the waterproof version, so I have no idea if the normal version is as majestic as this one.

Lets move on to another gift from the makeup gods, the Beauty Blender. My guess is you have already heard about this stupidly expensive sponge, but skipped on purchasing it because it's stupidly expensive. Why on earth would anyone need to spend $20 on a sponge when there are so many alternatives to applying foundation you ask? I don't know what sort of glorious foam this thing is made of, but trust me when I say it is well worth the hype.

Mine is just stained from lots of use, not dirty. Don't judge me.
You use this by running it under warm water and squeezing out the excess so it is damp. This will cause the Beauty Blender's size to double and become nice and... spongy? My thesaurus failed me on a better descriptive word. Because the sponge is wet it wont soak up any extra foundation and waste product. Then all you do is bounce it over your skin and somehow, someway, your foundation will look better than it ever has before. While there are many great foundation tools out there, including your fingers, nothing can quite compare to this product for me.

Brows on fleek is what comes to mind when I think of this next favorite. Who came up with that phrase anyway, they need to be imprisoned. Anyway, if you want brows that radiate said fleekness, you will give the Anastasia Brow Wiz a go.

Sadly I have just run out of mine so I had to use my NYX ones for pictures, they look exactly the same though.
What makes this eyebrow pencil different from any other I've tried is the size of the pencil. It is so thin that you can be precise in where you place the strokes, so much so that they even look like actual brow hairs if you draw them on in a flicking motion. The product is also very hard and firm which means that it makes it very hard to overdo penciling them in. Lets move away from those Sharpied on Nike swoops ladies.

While this is a pricey little number at $21, it is well worth the splurge in my book. However if it is a little steep for you, I have found an awesome alternative. Its the NYX Micro Brow pencil and it comes in at just under half the price at $9.99. It's honestly about just as good as the Brow Wiz, but there's just something about the latter that I just can't stay away from!

Let's conclude with a little more drugstore goodness shall we? That would be the Maybelline Creamy Matte lipsticks. As we all know matte lipsticks have taken over the lipstick scene at the moment. I usually don't like to spend a lot on makeup that may only be trendy for a short amount of time, which makes the $5.99 price tag extremely appealing in my book. My all time favorite shade from this line is 'Daringly Nude'. This shade also follows along the sort of 90's dark nude lip trend. So we may as well kill 2 birds with one stone!

Not only is the shade spectacular, but the formula is as well. Matte lipsticks often have a bad reputation as being uber drying on the lips. But this Creamy Matte lipstick is super creamy. I know, who woulda thought! While the formula does dry down, it doesn't leave you with that horrible 'my lips have been sucked into a food dehydrator' feeling. There is also an awesome range of colors to choose from. Everything from nudes to brights to deep berries.

I hope these recommendations will save you a few wasted dollars and bad makeup days!

Keep those beautiful eyes peeled for part 2 of this post where I will go over my skincare favorites from this past year.

  1. I discovered the best mascara I've ever tried last week. Cover Girl clump crusher mascara in the green tube. Also $8. My lashes have never looked better. And another huge bargain - Blistex Vibrance - I found it at the grocery store in a pack of two for under $5. I can't say enough great things about it. Great for my lips with a touch of color. It even has a tiny round mirror on the end! But I'm going to try the Maybelline shade you suggested... it looks great on you!
